The Mainstream Entertainment Form Of Dance Has Undergone A Tremendous Transformation In Popular Culture

You can hardly find anyone around without any kind of interest in dance. Some may be gifted enough to perform the art while others may be just appreciating spectators. Only a very small portion of the onlookers used to technically analyze the dance form performed, usually they were dancers or those involved in related fields. The other majority of them enjoyed dance programs with their rhythmic movements, syncing and visual impressions. Dance programs were conducted for the wide public as parts of cultural festivals, concerts, carnivals, on-stage dance shows and of course in some movies. The situations are not the same anymore, this form of entertainment has reached deeper into the masses in different forms creating diverse impacts.

Media hyped and broadcasted shows based on dance have imparted a better understanding of the art form among the general public. Many of them can now distinguish between the various forms of dance and how technically perfect the performers are in their moves.

You need not be a dancer to understand the art form now

How many of knew to distinguish between a tango and a salsa about a decade ago? Or how many amongst us knew that you have to primarily use your toe-tip while performing a ballroom dance? Not many knew the native of different classical forms of dance. And above all of them, dancers were never this popular as celebrities before and not many dancing academies had become so famous, even globally. The dancers nowadays are so popular that the viewers and dance lovers know which is whose forte and who the best is in a particular form.

Movies had already made this one of the most popular and enjoyed forms of entertainment. Any theme or idea worked the best and caught the most attention when conveyed through a dance performance, be it a promotion

or a social cause. The strong visual impact a good dance could have on the mass public is beyond comparison to other art forms. No wonder, dance programs are being continued to be used as crowd-pullers also.

In the recent years, mass visual media has experienced a spurt in their growth. There may be several underlying reasons like dramatic and exponential events in the current affairs, the changing global trends, the power of the technology-oriented new generation of society. One of the mutual reasons may be the rise in popularity of mass entertainment shows featuring dance. This is called mutual because the increase in growth of viewership has fuelled the growth of media and the development of media has given dance greater dimensions to connect with the common society.

Almost every mainstream cultural or social event amasses huge crowd from the general society and dance features in most of them, for providing entertainment and increasing the fame quotient of the event. Single performances from renowned dancers, celebrities and group performances from famed troupes and dance schools have become an

integral part of our concerts and events.

Television-based dance shows are also called reality shows because they are expected to be close to real life performances. Auditions are usually conducted in different areas, colleges, public venues etc and the participants are selected from the real society, who are yet to attain any kind of fame in the field of dance. Advertisements are also given out to contact or register through phone, for example, like Phone Sky number. The participants may not be celebrities, but still, the shows become immensely famous and get high ratings and eventually the real world participants get a celebrity status. If this does not feel like true, then how can you explain the reason for the dance shows getting continued into season 1, season 2 and so on like an endless loop? These shows have brought several traditional and local types of dances which were previously unknown to the public into the limelight. The sudden increase in the number of students wishing to learn traditional dances is a proof of that.

Entertainment shows based on dance not only give the participants a path to glory in their favorite art and talent but also the choreographers or dance composers more avenues to showcase their creativity and innovations in their dancing forte. New forms of dances are getting created through the media. Local and ancient dance forms are reaching global platforms, for example, you can see an Indian classical dance performance in an American show or a Latin Cha-Cha in an Indian show and both being appreciated. Dance has really transformed and has multiple faces in the visual world and we are more entertained every time.
